SPOT Workshop: Advanced Advocacy Strategies
Renay Zamloot, Education Advocate
Monday, May 21, 2007, 7:30pm THS

SPOT hosted an Advanced Advocacy Strategies workshop on Monday, May 21st, featuring Renay Zamloot, Education Advocate. She shared techniques for negotiating without arguing, the art of applying the law to secure needed services, and how to redirect counterproductive dialogue. We learned how to organize documents and how to write letters that get results. The emphasis was on learning to become an effective and equal member of the IEP process. Handouts from her presentation can be downloaded from our resources page. Renay Zamloot is not an attorney and her ideas should not be construed as legal advice.

SPAN Presentation

At our December SPOT meeting, we enjoyed a presentation on changes in Special Education under IDEA 2004 Regulations, and the Revised NJ State Code. Our featured presenter was Carolyn Hayer, the Director of Parent & Professional Development for SPAN, the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network wherein she conducts trainings and workshops on issues related to special education throughout northern New Jersey. In addition, Mrs. Hayer is the Coordinator of the Region 1 Alliance for Parent Centers which provides technical assistance to parent centers throughout the Northeast US. Mrs. Hayer is a member of the NJ State Special Education Advisory Council, the NJ Council on Developmental Disabilities, COPAA (Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates) and is also Vice-President of the Hackensack Board of Education. For those who missed this very informative presentation, more information can be found on our resources page.
